Children Of Bodom (II)

Interview mit Jaska [Children Of Bodom], August 2009, mailer

How are you doing? Enjoying the summer and festivals so far?

Jaska: We are on vacation right now and feeling very well, thanks. The last festival of this summer was on my birthday, so it was kind of fun.

On the 23rd of September you will release a cover album called “Skeletons In The Closet”. How did the idea for this cover album come about?

Jaska: Since we have done so many covers in the past until today we started to think about having them in the same package, so that everybody could hear them. Cover songs have always been some sort of way out for us, so that we don´t always have to be so serious and work around metal music – even though they are always COB-versions. We have taken songs from many different styles and it´s been always a fun and enjoyable process.

Why is “Skeletons In The Closet” a perfect title for the cover album?

Jaska: I think there are a couple of songs that people don´t know we have done. And these songs are not that obvious.

The album will be published in Europe, USA and Japan in different versions. Why?

Jaska: Because there are different kinds of rights in every territory.

On the CD you have covered bands and artists like the Scorpions, Ramones and Alice Cooper. How did you decide which songs will be covered?

Jaska: Sometimes when we are drunk in the tour bus, we might get these stupid ideas to do something silly. Sometimes we hear a song and suddenly realise that this or that might be good song to cover. First of all we like to shock people and it is boring to cover bands like Metallica.

Where and in which period did you record the album?

Jaska: The oldest ones are from 1997 and the newest ones are made in this summer. We usually recorded the cover songs in the same sessions and studios where we record our own albums.

Are there any anecdotes you can tell us about the recording sessions?

Jaska: Every session has its own stories. A funny thing is that sometimes I haven´t been able to memorise a song good enough, so that I have had to write its structure on the paper and then record it immediately. Now, when I heard all the covers again after a period of time, I don´t even remember that I recorded some of them. Usually we are a little bit drunk, when we record these covers.

Which cover is your personal highlight on “Skeletons In The Closet”?

Jaska: I personally like CCR and Britney Spears, because they are not that obvious and the other one is quite shocking from the fan point of view…

Indeed, the cover of Britney Spears` “Ooops!… I Did It Again” breaks a bit ranks. And it was already published four years ago on one of your singles. In the middle of this song you`re talking in Finnish there. About what?

Jaska: About sixpack… for a breakfast.

Have you recorded a new version of “Ooops!… I Did It Again” for the cover album?

Jaska: No

Honestly, do you own one of Britney`s albums?

Jaska: No, but I think I have a couple of her songs in my iTunes.

Will you also present some of the cover songs on the forthcoming tour in September and October?

Jaska: I guess not, but I would like to.

The tour will guide you through America, Japan, China, Taiwan, Russia and even Hawaii. Which places are you especially looking forward to?

Jaska: Of course Hawaii, because we have two days off there, so we can have a short holiday in the middle of the tour. We haven´t played in China or Taiwan yet, so they are naturally worth to mention. I´m also waiting a lot for the gigs in Canada, because we haven´t played there as a headliner on this world tour and I think we have quite a great success there nowadays and it is definitely one of my favourite countries.

How`s Alexi doing since he got injured during the North American tour earlier this year?

Jaska: He´s good.

When will you be back in Germany?

Jaska: Next summer probably.
